⚡ Priorities

  • Young Australian of the Year, Baker Boy, was named the Young Australian Of The Year on the same day he released his single Cool As Hell.
Imagine being named Young Australian Of The Year and having that be the second-coolest thing you’d done that day.
  • Lauv is back! He has Troye Sivan on his new song! This one last for 2:42 so as soon as you’re done with it you want to listen again, which is a very good strategy for anyone looking to boost their Spotify and YouTube numbers.
  • Is Someone New going to be the song that breaks Astrid S in Australia? And, if I may, a follow up: if it’s not, what does she have to do to get a hit in Australia?
  • Given its #4 spot in the Hottest 100, and its impending shot at a Grammy, surely Fisher’s Losing It is about to cross over to pop radio.
  • Zero Gravity by Kate Miller-Heidke has a solid shot at taking out Eurovision: Australia Decides this weekend, just because it very neatly balances the weirdness it needs to stand out with the sing-along bit it needs. It features some nice delicate Last Day On Earth bits, some ridiculous KMH opera bits, some honestly very Dami Im Sound of Silence-esque bits, vaguely emotional word-salad lyrics (lock with no key, earth with no sea), a pulsing bassline, and some stompy-clappy bits towards the end.
  • It took me a few days, but I think I’ve worked out who that new Robinson song Karma sounds like. The verse has more than a touch of the Selena Gomez about it, don’t you reckon? It’s less breathy than Selena, but the phrasing is bang on.
  • Julia Michaels’ ep Inner Monologue is out, and Anxiety with Selena Gomez seems to be the song people are getting around. I may have played this about fifteen times in a row when I first heard it.

🤷‍♀️ YMMV

  • Mallrat’s flawless Groceries did quite well in the Hottest 100. Her new song with Basenji doesn’t hit the heights of Groceries, but it’s a grower.
    The video clip is wonderful.
  • Galantis and OneRepublic have basically done Avicii’s Wake Me Up, but slightly different. If you needed something country-ish to wash out the taste of Dan + Shay’s When I Taste Tequila, you could do much worse than this.
  • Bastille have re-released their quite good I Know You with additional Craig David for some reason.
  • Let’s round out this week with RITUAL and Tove Styrke, because I’m wearing my Tove Styrke t-shirt as I write this and to not include this would feel like a betrayal.
