You’ve changed, you used to be about the… oh wait

The Chainsmokers are musical tofu. They continue to have no original personality of their own, and just absorb the sound of whatever is now popular. When they released #Selfie in 2014, they sounded like most of the EDM around at the time. By the time they released Closer and Paris, they’d pulled down the tempo and stripped back the production to match the sound of everything else on the radio.

Fast forward to 2018. If you like this song, it might be because you like Imagine Dragons and/or Twenty One Pilots, because that’s who The Chainsmokers now sound like. In fact, some of the phrasing is so similar to Tyler from Twenty One Pilots’ style of vocal delivery — particularly the way Drew pronounces “narcissism” — you begin to wonder if they’ve had Blurryface on repeat.

But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed; one guaranteed way to tell that it’s a Chainsmokers song.

Here is the chorus of Sick Boy:

I am the, I am the, I am the sick boy
I am the, I am the, I am the sick boy
They say that I am the sick boy
And they call me the sick boy

Let’s now compare with the chorus of their 2017 single Honest:

If I’m being honest
If I’m being honest
You said I should be honest
So I’m being honest

Sounds cool, but lyrically shallow and embarrassing? Yep. It’s definitely a Chainsmokers song.
