We Got Love • Jessica Mauboy

This is very top-half-of-the-board

Jessica Mauboy has promised big things for her tilt at Eurovision 2018.

Thankfully, her promise has been kept, and she’s coming to Eurovision with an uptempo song with a catchy chorus, thanks to old mates DNA.

She’s also said “I almost feel like I’ve been waiting for this, like it’s unfinished business.” This is also good news; essentially, Jessica Mauboy is coming for blood.

(Of course, I say “coming for blood”, but what I really mean is that she wants to unite everyone with the Power Of Music and/or Love, like most other Eurovision contestants.)

The song leaked online earlier in the week, so it’s kinda ruined this whole teaser campaign they’ve organised where Dami and Isaiah tweeted about it before Jess did, but it’s not ruined the actual song. It’s ready-made stadium pop and, not to get too confident or anything, but I reckon she’ll do pretty bloody alright with it.

The official version goes for 3:22, and Eurovision rules state it needs to be 3:00 or less, so that final twenty two seconds on the end is really just so radio can talk over the end of it. Jessica just thinks of everybody.

I really feel like Jess’ campaign this year is going to be more successful than last year’s campaign. Last year’s strategy wasn’t bad; get Isaiah, who had received millions upon millions of streams of his debut single It’s Gotta Be You from Europe, give him some similar sounding Spotify-friendly pop which should take about two months to become a proper hit in the lead up to Eurovision, and then monster the competition by brand recognition. It was clever, but it missed a key point: the song can’t just be a grower, it has to hit hard from the first listen, because the majority of people watching Eurovision are hearing the song for the first time during the live show, and want to feel something.

We Got Love is immediate in a way Don’t Come Easy wasn’t.

Also, mad props to SBS and Sony, who have cast four POC as Australia’s Eurovision contestant in four years, truly representing Australia’s diversity.

Jessica, no pressure or anything, but you must win this for us.

This song has been added to our Pop Australia playlist on Spotify, dedicated to the best of Australian pop music.
