People say AI/ML is the game changer but being an IoT enthusiast I always counter by giving the fact that Industry 4.0 shows a different picture in which everything revolves around IoT, an acronym for the Internet of Things. While my mind was loitering in thought on various tech, it intrigued me whether an IoT system will still be considered under the umbrella of IoT if the staff of the umbrella i.e. Internet is missing from the system. Also, not all smart devices like smartwatches can be considered as part of IoT, as most of them use Bluetooth for communication with devices.

To give an insight we can consider a scenario of agricultural land with a (local) network of sensors that measure the temperature and humidity levels and send the collected data, via some protocol i.e. IEEE 802.11 (mostly known as WiFi), to a nearby base station. In this example, the system does not need to be connected to the Internet.

Now you must have noticed the fact the everywhere the Internet is used with an ‘I’ and not an ‘i’. This is because the Internet and the internet are two different terminologies. An internet is a series of networks owned by two or more organizations and set up to communicate with each other. The Internet is the worldwide network comprising of all other networks interconnected and communicating on the open Web.

Now we can say if a project or product falls under an embedded system if it should sticks to hardware-based protocols like USART, USB, SPI, etc. for communication. The term Internet of Things is coined with term Internet with ‘I’ but it represent the internet hence an interconnected network which may be as small as a home network to scaling up to global network like the Internet. We can still distinguish Internet connectivity by IoT and ioT for our better understanding.
