This Yom Kippur, We Are Powerful

Over the past three days, nearly 400 of us have taken public action to #HeedTheCall

In just a few hours, Yom Kippur begins and Jews across the country will spend a full day reflecting on and repenting for the past year’s mistakes.

Over the past three days, nearly 400 of us have hit the streets from coast to coast — demanding that the Jewish community join our generation in truly reflecting on the realities of the occupation, repenting for our long-term support for it, and committing to working toward freedom and dignity for all Israelis and Palestinians in this new year.

(And all this before IfNotNow DC holds a public fast the day after Yom Kippur! Check it out: We’re Not Done Fasting: 50 Years of Occupation.)

IfNotNow Bay Area taking the streets.

You better bet the leaders of the establishment wish we would stop marching in the streets, stop writing op-eds, stop sharing videos with our friends and family on facebook, stop organizing against the occupation.

They want things to go back to normal.

But we know there is nothing normal about an occupation that lasts 50 years. We know there is nothing normal about the ways our community has ignored and — all too often — actively supported that occupation.

You know what we’ll be doing in 5777 — continuing to take bold, public action with the movement we’ve been building in 5776. Here are some photos of what we’ve been able to build together.

The past few days have been inspiring:

IfNotNow Chicago marching in Lakeview.
IfNotNow NYC members marching through Manhattan.
IfNotNow LA Tashlich ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica.
IfNotNow Bay Area closing their demonstration in a park.
IfNotNow Boston braved the rain to march in the annual HONK! Parade.
IfNotNow NYC members said the names of all Israelis and Palestinians killed in 5776.
Members of IfNotNow Philly delivering apples and honey to Drexel Hillel
IfNotNow Chicago marching in Lakeview.
IfNotNow Bay Area demonstrating in front of the SF Jewish Community Federation.

So won’t you join us this year?
