Fumarii Technologies, founded by Durham University graduate Liam Gill, is allowing individuals and small businesses to access digital resources typically only available to large firms. To do this they aim to turn any screen into a supercomputer and in doing so they will empower the next generation of visionaries.

The Team

Fumarii is currently made up of four Durham University alumni and students. Pictured from top left clockwise are Liam, Rhys, Alfie and Patrick.

Between them the team has previous entrepreneurial experience, a big vision and the commitment to see it through — you can read more about them here!

The Vision

Everyone has a goal, vision and dream but for many, the ability to make it a reality is impeded by a lack of access to resources. For designers, engineers, architects, gamers, animators or scientists, the scarce resource is often high-end computing. These ‘supercomputers’ which are owned by government
and conglomerates often allow them to perform in mere seconds tasks that take the average person months. Fumarii will allow these people to make their visions a reality.

With Fumarii technology, you will be able to make your computer into a supercomputer with just the click of a mouse. This will allow you to access these resources and to do so at a reasonable price. By allowing millions of people to remotely access supercomputers, the costs can be shared and so can the resources available to us.

Fumarii highlight to me that when computers first came out, they created a great technological divide between companies and individuals — they helped to centralise power in business over people. The personal computer then changed this with revolutionary technology aimed at the consumer. However the latest and biggest technological advances have been saved for companies.

“This isn’t right. In a world where people increasingly want to be their own boss, we need to ensure that they are given equal opportunity to succeed.”

How does it work?

Fumarii have multiple offerings but are focused on the Fumarii Cloud. This is a software network they hope will be able to provide three new experiences for all our users.

From their own statement:

  1. Firstly, the Fumarii Cloud will allow you to upgrade your existing device by launching your own desktop and applications in the cloud. If you are tired of a slow computer or simply want to do more intensive tasks such as gaming or video editing, the Fumarii Cloud is for you. Just by downloading our application you will be able to start accessing more computing power without needing to replace your own devices.
  2. Second, the Fumarii Cloud will enable you to use your desktop in virtual reality. Using the Fumarii Cloud you will be able to stream your computer to your VR headset. This means that you can sit back and relax whilst using your computer on the couch or in bed. Alternatively, if you’re a freelancer wanting to save on rent but have a work environment, you can instantly turn your room into an office by entering VR and using your computer in an office setting. If you feel like it, you can even use your computer in a virtual cinema, in space, or on a beach.
  3. Finally, the Fumarii Cloud will enable you to virtually connect to your desktop computer from anywhere in the world. If you are away on business you will be able to use your laptop to connect to your work PC, access the files and computation you need. Alternatively, if you are a gamer away on vacation and want to play a couple of games, you can access your gaming PC at home from the hotel computer or your own laptop and have access to your entire array of games and home PC to run them.

The Fumarii Cloud looks to make computing more fluid. For too long software and hardware have been heavily tied. You could only do specific things on specific computers, with the Fumarii Cloud we break down these barriers.

How you can help?

Fumarii’s technology is in its later stages of development and we can expect a public launch in the coming months. Between then and now Fumarii are looking to launch exclusive trials to test the product and improve it. If you want to keep up to date or you want to be a part of the trials then go and get in touch with them on Facebook or Twitter. Additionally check out their own blog!

Applications for the 2019 pre-accelerator will open in April. You can read more about what the programme can do for you and your startup on the Ignite website and, in the meantime, feel free to contact us to talk through how Ignite can help you get started!
