I spent most of the morning this past Tuesday at my first ever Farmer’s Market Uptown (along Leake Ave. right accross from the levee). I know it sounds truly horrible and I feel super guilty, but I’m thrilled I pulled over and experienced one the finest local markets! I met some great people and made some great selections. Check it out…

Here’s the Market’s mission statement :

“The Crescent City Farmers Market is the public face of Market Umbrella, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nongovernmental organization. Founded in 1995 as a part of the Twomey Center for Peace Through Justice at Loyola University New Orleans, the Market is an outgrowth and reflection of Market Umbrella’s core mission to cultivate the field of public markets for public good. Learning, sharing and growing, Market Umbrella cultivates community markets that utilize local resources to bolster authentic local traditions. We believe that ambitious social, health, environmental and financial goals are achieved if trust and respect are present. We envision communities of market umbrellas, like flowers in the field, opening all over the world for public good.”

The statement above certainly rings true in many ways. Community is a big part of the market’s success. Whether it’s the community of regular farmers or the community that it draws into the market each week, CCFM is doing good and exciting work. The vibe is inclusive and friendly and the products hosted at each tent are as vibrant and as colorful as their purveyours. Smiles and warm regards shined bright from each stall. Folks travel from all over the Gulf South to share their spoils and hard work with each shopper.

I met some amazing people and scored some amazing produce and products I felt really good afterward. The fruit of one person’s labor is another person’s spoil. I’ll make sure to get back when I can to again contribute to the cycle of good things. There are several markets all over town and they run from Tuesdays — Saturdays (hours vary).
