The hair on its limbs looks like “mozuku” which is a kind of seaweed. “Gani” or “kani” means crab in Japanese. They live in rivers throughout Japan. In autumn, the female crab has roe, which is rich and flavorful. It is caught by using crabbing baskets and sold in supermarkets and Izakayas (Japanese-style taverns). It costs about a few dollars in Japan, but the Chinese mitten crab-also known as “the Shanghai hairy crab”-costs ten to fifty dollars in China.
