Happy New Year !

The Japanese merrily cerebrate Christmas with family and/or friends, then cerebrate New Year’s Day calmly with family. Osechi is a special Japanese dish made only on Osyogatsu (New Year’s Day). Each dish has a traditional meaning. Shrimp means long life as its waist is bent forward like long-living people. Fish eggs imply you will have lots of children. Kuri-kinton (sweet chestnut paste) means being rich as it’s gold in color. When I was a child, my mother and aunts were always very busy at year’s end making Osechi at my grandparent’s house. However, we buy Osechi these days as people are busy even at the end of the year.
