In Japan, curry generally means “curry on rice”, and the sauce of the curry is thick gruel. It is often offered at home, in restaurants and in coffee shops.

“Soup curry” is different from typical Japanese curry. It was invented in 1971 in a coffee shop in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The soup curry is watery and spicy, and the ingredients, such as chicken, shrimp, potatoes, and carrots are bigger than the typical curry. As one can enjoy the whole fresh vegetables and meat from nature in Hokkaido, it spread throughout Hokkaido.
