Chapter I- Which part of Malta you should stay in during your vacation?

Don’t let the small size of the island fool you. Traffic jams are common, especially during the summer months. This can cause relatively short commutes by bus to take longer than expected.

If you are a tourist, who is spending a few days in Malta, you can choose to live pretty much anywhere on the Island.

However, if you plan to study, work or do an internship here you can read this guide to renting in Malta. This article could help you to find an apartment to rent Malta.

Some of the popular places to stay in Malta for tourists are:

St Julian’s & Sliema

These two cities can be considered as the downtown of Malta. They are both coastal towns with an abundance of cafés, restaurants, bars and beaches.
Paceville-the unofficial “party” strip of Malta is also located within St Julians.

There are many hotels and hostels in these two cities and they are well connected by many bus lines. St Julian’s is renowned for its nightlife.

Valletta

Valletta has many historical spots to explore and tends to be teeming with tourists throughout the year. But, there aren’t many hotels here.

Floriana is right next to Valletta and has several hotels. It also has several beautiful gardens and amazing architecture. Most of the buses originate from Valletta.

Floriana’s close proximity to Valletta and its central location makes it a good place to stay while you visit Malta.

St Paul’s Bay

This was originally a fishing village. It has recently been transformed into a popular tourist resort. It tends to be cheaper than St Julian’s and Sliema. Qawra is part of St Paul’s Bay and tends to be the quietest neighbourhood in St Paul’s Bay.

Mellieha

Mellieha is located north of St Paul’s bay and is full of luxury hotel resorts. It is best known for the Golden Bay Beach. This beach is one of the most popular beaches in Malta.

Gozo & Comino

Gozo is the second largest island in the Maltese Archipelago. Gozo is quieter than Malta and is much more rural and picturesque. You can choose to stay at a hotel in Gozo if you plan to explore it.

Comino has just 3 permanent residents and has very few hotels. Both places have plenty of camping sites.

Chapter II- Where to stay in Malta according to your budget

Hostels:

If you are a budget traveller then you should stay in a hostel. If you are seasoned backpacker you probably already do this. There are 36 hostels listed on hostelworld.com.

If you have never lived in a hostel here’s what you need to know…

  1. You share a room with other travellers- most hostels have 6–10 beds per room. These rooms may and or may not offer lockers for your belongings. A lot of hostels offer private rooms too.
  2. You get to make amazing friends and beautiful memories- The social life in most hostels is great! Most of them have plenty of activities planned throughout the day.
Most people in hostels are seasoned backpackers and will help you to get out of your shell. Exploring Malta with other travellers is much more fun than doing it alone. That’s a lot to say from a stubborn introvert like myself.
  3. Free wifi, breakfast & a kitchen- most hostels offer free wifi and & breakfast. This helps you save some money on buying food. If you are lucky and hang around the kitchen, someone might offer you some food.
  4. Community living- Community living is a big part of hostel life. Most places make you feel like you are home. Living in a hostel teaches you to be responsible and sensitive to your surroundings and to other people.
A good backpacker cleans up after himself and doesn’t disturb his/her fellow travellers.
  5. Check the reviews- Always check the reviews of the hostel you plan to book. You don’t want to end up in a dull hostel. Go on either hostelworld.com or booking.com to see how quickly rooms tend to be booked.
I personally don’t book a hostel for more than 2 nights. This gives me the freedom to look for another hostel in case my hostel isn’t great.

The cheapest hostel I could find in Malta was for just €9.50 per night!
Some popular sites to book a hostel include:
>hostelworld.com
>Booking.com
>hostelsclub.com
>hostelgeeks.com

Even if you are shy you’ll feel right at home in a good hostel.

Airbnb

An Airbnb apartment is a pretty good option if you plan to stay for a week or more. The longer you stay, the cheaper it can be to rent a room.
Whether or not you will like your experience comes down to your host.

Try to get in touch with your host and go through the reviews on the website and decide for yourself.

Price 💲💲/💲💲💲

Prices for an Airbnb in Malta can range from €12(like this one) to upwards of €100/day. Rooms cheaper than €30/day tend to be booked well in advance and are hard to find in the central areas.

Renting an Apartment in Malta

If you plan to stay for at least a month or more, renting an apartment is a very good option. Rent prices rise dramatically during the summer months. But, that doesn’t mean you won’t get a good deal.
There are two kind of renting offers- long let and short let. Long let apartments or rooms are for a length of anywhere from 4 months to 1 year.
Short let offers are for a period 3 months or less.
You can follow this guide to help you find a place to rent in Malta.

Price:
Shared rooms: €200- €300 per month
Private room in a shared apartment: €300 to €550 per month
Studio apartment: €500 to €800 per month
Two bedroom apartments: €600-€1000 per month
Bills for utilities like water, electricity and wifi may be included in the price.

Hotels

Malta has plenty of hotels. After scouring through booking.com I found out that the cheapest ones go for around €30 per night and they are booked pretty fast. On average, you should expect to spend around €40 unless you get lucky or come to Malta during the off-season.
