Fresh out of Law school with honors and passing the bar on her first attempt, along with the assistance of her family and a heart determined to destroy all stereotypes that plague her gender and race. Embraced by a will to succeed and make her grandmother proud, Maeko Samoya was accepted into Clinton and Barrett’s prestigious all-black law firm.
They were every young black lawyer’s dream. In her class at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, some said they would work for free for the first year just to get in. Maeko nodded, thinking, ‘I am an incentive and asset to their business and name; why would I work for free?’
Still, she was ecstatic, beaming in satisfaction and joy, hugging her grandmother at home when she got the news. Her heart and soul slowly stepped back to her struggles, to many sleepless nights when failure threatened, blocking the path to her dreams. Having to redo classes she failed because of having two jobs while attending college full time.
