Buried so deeply in Jerome’s heart that he was only occasionally even aware of it lingered his resolve to — with his Latin translation of the Scriptures — give the people (the priest, of course, but primarily the peasant) not the Bible they perhaps expected or deserved but the Bible that they, in Jerome’s not so humble opinion, needed.
