AI Governance: Bold Promises, But Are They Ready for the Real Challenges?

Federal agencies seem unprepared and lack concrete plans to handle the real challenges posed by AI

Last year the Biden Administration took a big step to make sure Artificial Intelligence (AI) is regulated. They issued an Executive Order called “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence”!

So, the government wants to ensure AI benefits everyone and doesn’t pose risks, for of all to the government itself. They’ve been looking on several fronts to achieve this:

  1. AI Bill of Rights. A set of principles from the White House on how to design and use automated systems.
  2. Risk Management Framework. Guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to help manage AI risks.
  3. Commitments from Big Companies. Of course, the White House has also secured promises from leading tech companies to develop AI safely and transparently.

Basically, the order focuses on how the government itself uses AI. Here’s what it aims to do:

  1. Set rules for federal agencies to ensure they use AI in ways that protect people’s rights and safety.
  2. Help government agencies buy AI tools more efficiently and cost-effectively.
