As Sure As The Sun Rises In The East And Sets In The West

Because the Earth rotates toward the east the Sun, Moon, planets all rise in the east and make their way westward across the sky. Been that way for years.

I always figured my cousin Kit was smarter than I was.

Maybe it’s because he was a year older and it just seemed that way to me.

That’s why when on the corner waiting for the bus to take us to Oakhurst Elementary School I believed him when he said NACA* scientists were working on a secret project.

They were trying to make the Sun rise in the west and set in the east.

The bus came and there was no time for explanation or details.

I must confess I couldn’t stop thinking about the ramifications of such a scientific breakthrough.

Would I eat breakfast at night? Would Smokey, my cat, go out at night and come inside during the day? Would Santa come for lunch?

The frail lines that tethered my thought patterns to reality became untied.

My mind wandered with the possibilities…….

Rise in the west and set in the east?
