Between every thought, word, action, and blink of the eye is a gap, a space, an interlude of silent stillness where nothing and everything exists. It is in this gap that the mind finds the ultimate clarity and a reality where the sense of a self cannot be.

This stateless state exists prior to thought, words, deeds, phenomena, and even consciousness. We can say that it exists, yet there really is no word that is adequate to describe it. It has no opposite — it doesn’t ever not exist and yet it is prior to existence. It is permanent and not available to the busy, distracted mind of the self. We may fall into this space unexpectedly, and most of us already have. But we are most apt to ignore it and not notice the implications of having been there once we return to the world of existence, movement, the self, and thought.

Until the mind is clarified it cannot recognize its own natural state in order to abide in it.

“The ignorant one does not see his ignorance as he basks in its darkness;
nor does the knowledgeable one see his own knowledge,
for he basks in its light.”
— Ibn Arabi
