President-elect Donald Trump rekindled interest in buying Greenland in October 2024, saying the land was an absolute necessity for national security and freedom of the world. Such a geopolitical move has only added weight to this statement triggering discussions about its feasibility and implications.

Historically, the USA supported territorial enhancement to reinforce its essential and monetary administrative appearance. The Louisiana Purchase and Alaska are both ideal examples of successful expansions which were met with skepticism at first. Greenland, with its vast untapped resources, a pivotal Arctic location, and the fact that it’s less developed and less protected by human beings than North America towards its east, holds a contemporary opportunity that fits the historical pattern.

Greenland’s importance has risen geopolitically as the Arctic has altered, and global warming has spurred an environmental movement that brings people to cooler regions. This could give the U.S. an edge as climate change opens new shipping routes and access to resources and could lead to control over Greenland and a run through the Arctic could provide the U.S. a strategic lock in Arctic navigation and…
