“This town is fake, but you’re the real thing,” Taylor Swift sings on her new song, “Clara Bow.” Excitement pulsed through her fan base when it was announced that the singer penned a song about the former movie star. Many argued that there were similarities between the women, despite there being nearly a century between their respective rises to fame.

Among the common threads between them is that each woman has been one of, if not, the most famous people on Earth. The way each of the ladies navigated the press and stood firm in their beliefs set them apart from their peers.

Ms. Swift has also been inundated with enemies that have tried to claim her success for their own. She has also dealt with those who have tried to take away her success or boil it down to nothing more than appealing to an audience that would eventually abandon her.

Likewise, Ms. Bow dealt with people who tried to reduce her to nothing more than a “flapper” who used her feminine wiles to become beloved among men. Some claimed that her innocent act was performative and attempted to use the gossip columns to bring her down.
