The Degrading Message Behind Dylan Mulvaney’s Daily Misogyny
Girlhood is not a costume.
Costumes have got a lot of people in trouble over the years.
There was Prince Harry’s turn as a Nazi, Justin Trudeau’s penchant for black/brown face, Sam Smith’s…whatever this is. Heck, according to Quentin Tarantino, even Superman is guilty of thinly disguised “human-face”:
A staple of the superhero mythology is the superhero and the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker.
When Peter Parker wakes up in the morning, he’s Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic that Superman stands alone […]
When Superman wakes up in the morning, he’s Superman. His outfit with the big red “S”, that’s the blanket he was found in as a baby. Those are his clothes. What Clark Kent wears: the glasses, the business suit, that’s the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. […] He’s weak. He’s unsure of himself. He’s a coward.
Clark Kent is Superman’s critique on the whole human race.
Generally speaking, costumes are just harmless fun. Most people understand that changing your clothes isn’t an endorsement or a political statement.
