Many of us dream of a muscular, fit, and “toned” physique. Some of us just want to be fit and healthy while looking a little better.

So, we sign up for a gym membership to exercise. Resistance training is the most common form of exercise at most gyms.

But what exactly is resistance training?

In this article, I explain the different types of resistance training and provide twenty common exercises.

Defining Resistance Training

Resistance training, also known as "working out" or "pumping iron”, involves exercising muscles against external weight or force. This process enhances our overall physical health, performance and functionality like strength or endurance, bone density, muscle mass and metabolism.

Resistance training uses weights, our body weight, or other equipment to provide resistance to the force our muscles produce. The goal is to challenge our muscles to adapt and grow stronger over time. It can also support weight loss/weight management goals by increasing how many calories (energy) we burn.
