On September 26, 2023, Google dropped a bombshell announcement — their beloved Google Podcasts app is set to bid farewell in 2024. This move is part of Google’s grand plan to usher its streaming enthusiasts into the embrace of YouTube Music.

Launched with high hopes in 2018, Google Podcasts managed to secure a spot among the podcast app elite but never quite managed to reach the heights scaled by Apple Podcasts and Spotify. In 2023, Google Podcasts commanded a mere 4% of the market, dwarfed by Apple Podcasts’ 28% and Spotify’s 25%.

Why, you ask, is Google pulling the plug on podcasts? Firstly, it struggled to win over the masses. Secondly, Google had already been pouring resources into podcast integration with YouTube Music, a platform that has been championing podcasts since 2023 in the US, with global expansion slated for the end of 2023.

Google has vowed to ease the transition for podcast creators and listeners alike, promising substantial investments in new podcast features on YouTube Music.
