Growing a Business Like I Grow My Basil

Most people make this one mistake when they grow basil: they pull off the largest leaves and then wonder why the plant stops producing.

Continually taking only the best leaves stunts the plant’s growth, makes it more susceptible to diseases and pests, and weakens it. The trick to an abundant harvest is to clip the stem and leaves about 1/4 inch above a leaf node (where the leaf meets the stem). You will then pull the leaves off the stem, and the rest can be composted.

Pruning the plant in this way encourages growth by signalling to the plant that it needs to branch out. Just like Greek mythology’s Hydra, when you cut off one head of a basil plant, two more grow in its place.

Making content creation into a business requires the same kind of pruning as a basil plant.
