Technology has made it much easier for us to stay well and healthy. Early innovations like television and radio helped prevent sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and conditions linked to tobacco and alcoholism. Telephone-based counseling also served to sustain health-protective behavior over extended periods. Today, there are many new technologies that can help us live better lives.

Here are a few crucial innovations impacting us in a big way…

Wearable sensors

The newer mobile technology and the synchronous evolution of the high-speed internet have created profound opportunities. The latest smartphones and wearable sensors have become so advanced that they can monitor multiple health parameters. One such vital parameter is the— ECG (heart rhythm).

There are around 17.9 million cardiovascular deaths globally —which account to 32% of all deaths.

There is fierce competition between companies to develop instruments capable of identifying cardiac arrhythmias, and the smartphone-based single-lead ECG is an exciting advance. If this technology becomes cost-effective and user-friendly, it will become an exceptional measure for reducing the global burden of cardiovascular disease.

Artificial intelligence is also making a notable impact in cardiology; one day, it will be possible to beat experienced human interpreters at their own game.

Mobile apps

In recent years, mobile apps have gained popularity. Numerous apps exist that can help users to establish workout routines and navigate sedentary lifestyles. Apps also assist users in modifying dietary habits, optimizing water consumption, and incorporating good lifestyle practices like Yoga and meditation.

When people are acclimatized to Yoga and meditation, they experience more rest, relaxation, and resilience — which restores their health and well-being.

Social networks

Social networks are the latest frontier for the delivery of health messages. With billions of users accessing these platforms, it has become possible to share health-promotional notes and other updates. This is why top-level organizations like World Health Organization and nation-level health authorities post important information on their social media accounts.

Telediagnosis

Mobile phones are increasingly popular, and cameras have also changed a lot. With the kind of technology that is available today, patients can share clinical photographs of specific problems with their doctors by using teleconferencing modes.

As many skin-mouth diseases show typical color changes and appearance, clinicians can review images of these diseases through teleconsultation, and they can come up with a spot diagnosis. Later they could be treated or referred to the nearest consultant for a second opinion or validation.

Final thoughts

Amazing developments are underway in fields like computer science and sensor technology. As a result, we can expect significant improvements in the quality of home-based health care delivered by gadgets.
