In July of 2023, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to pay taxes on more than $1.5 million in income in 2017 and 2018 despite owing more than $100,000. A plea on another case of unlawfully owning a firearm while using illegal drugs was not entered at that time. The plan by investigators was to surprise Hunter Biden with an interview request. They, however, had to notify the Secret Service before a scheduled interview. The FBI and the Secret Service were notified about these plans and afterward, the interview was blocked.

Joe Gordon, a former FBI supervisory agent was identified in Gary Shapley’s testimony in a transcribed interview that his supervisors gave Secret Service a “heads-up” about the plans of questioning within the Hunter Biden case. He was not aware of any political interference in the case. Gordon retired last year after more than 20 years with the agency. He was reportedly frustrated over the decision by more senior officials to block the interview but didn’t consider the outcome to be an ongoing issue.

The interview with President Joe Biden’s son was canceled weeks after the 2020 presidential election. Investigators were not allowed to interview Hunter Biden on Dec. 8, 2020, after top Secret Service officials and the Biden transition team were notified of the plan. (Reuters)
