Dwelling on first-world problems.
Dreaming of moving to Portugal?
You’re not alone. In recent years, Portugal has become a magnet for expats and digital nomads. People who move here in search of an easy lifestyle at affordable prices.
I am Portuguese and moved back home two years ago.
Before that, I lived in Paris, London and Budapest. But I wanted to be close to my family, so I packed my bags again. I always knew that coming back would be harder than moving abroad.
It’s the little Portuguese habits that bother me.
They might mean nothing to you. But they might also annoy the hell out of you. It’s better to be aware before you take the leap…
1. Time issues
Everything happens late in this country.
The Portuguese begin their days around 9 am and extend them well into the evening. They don’t do siestas like the Spanish. Their routine is similar to other Europeans’, but they do everything 1–2 hours later.
Finishing the workday? 6.30 pm.
Dinner with friends? 8.30 pm.
