BBC - Ethics - Abortion: When is the foetus 'alive'?
This article covers a central point in the abortion debate, which is: when does foetus become sufficiently human to…
I am looking at definitions for when a fetus has the right to life. I copy a link to a BBC piece on this above. Like most pieces I have been reading on this subject, there is no mention of the mother, as though the fetus is hanging in mid-air completely divorced from the mother. I am continually astounded at the complete lack of mention and sometimes malevolent attitude of writers to the mother.
What is it to be a zygote? Well, welcome to your mother’s body. Your mom’s ovum and your dad’s sperm just met and all went well. They joined and now you are a zygote. Right now you are in your mom’s fallopian tube traveling toward her womb where you will live for the next 9 months if you successfully implant in her endometrium. Many times zygotes fail to successfully implant for reasons not well known to scientists. If you do implant, then you will start to absorb nutrients from your mom’s endometrium as your placenta grows between your mom’s body and your navel:
You will receive nutrition and excrete products of your cellular respiration through the amazing placenta. You and your mom are sharing bodies but yet you are separate, and yeah, somehow your DNA travels into her and vice versa. Mom and kid are linked at the molecular level for the rest of their lives.
Mothers often know they are pregnant without a medical test. Our bodies start to change to help our baby grow. Once the baby implants, we grow the amazing placenta that links our bloodstream directly to our baby’s bloodstream. We share everything that bloodstreams can share. That is why moms need the right food and rest so what goes to their babies is what the kid needs to properly develop. Too bad that a large number of moms are abused in all cultures on earth. They are not properly fed. Their spouses often beat them, even when they are pregnant. Often women are pregnant due to rape or incest and there is extra abuse that goes with that. Plus, many single or married moms usually don’t have the resources to feed themselves or their growing babies. They are not safe. They are super stressed. The inflammation cells that are released by this stress enter the kids and inflame them too. Remember, moms and kids share blood. So, if the mom is malnourished, stressed, and beaten, so is the babe.
If a mom knew this would be the case when the babe was safe (ish) in her womb, how much worse would things be once the babe was born?
This is one reason moms who can manage it (emotionally or financially) have abortions. There are many reasons for abortion because moms are treated with varying degrees of cruelty and dismissiveness in ALL CULTURES ON EARTH. So, when you say right to life, what kind of life are you speaking of? Absent or abusive dads? A society that hates moms and treats pregnancy as a punishment? A society that doesn’t care if a born babe can eat, sleep in a safe home, have a viable future?
Not all moms have responsible spouses.
Not all dads are kind.
Raising a child alone is rewarding but so difficult for both mom and kid.
Right to life is so much more than the formation of a zygote that grows into a person sharing blood with mom who endures whatever she endures, a child who is loved or hated according to the mom’s social niche, network, and resources.
Having and raising a babe is as real as it gets on Earth and is the job least provided for and most reviled.
What did you say about right to life?
If the mother is reviled, that flows into the child during pregnancy, and later through the body-bond mother and child share for their entire lives.
If there is a God, any zygote aborted returns to God’s nest where whoever it will be can go forth into another womb at another time. No one has been harmed.
If there is no God, the zygote never achieved awareness nor did it suffer in any way. Which means any abortion MUST NEVER cause a zygote or fetus distress. This is a medical problem which medical researchers must solve.
But no one here is a criminal except societies and families who abuse a pregnant woman such that abortion seems the kindest thing she could do for her precious babe.
