The worst thing you could be when I was a boy in 1970s England was “soft”. I’m sure it was the same in other decades and in other places. Being “hard” meant that you weren’t to be messed with. You were unpredictably aggressive. Being “soft” meant getting pushed around. The words “homosexual” or “gay” were, interestingly, rarely used. I can remember that schoolyard taunts…
