We in the modern, western world are out of sync with nature — not just the kind of nature that has to do with oceans, jungles, rainforests, and unspoiled wilderness. Yes, some of us go for hikes or go camping or scuba diving, but then we go back to our lives in our artificial world of traffic, boxed cereal, microwaves, computers, restaurants, and plastic. For generations we have been slowly herded into a most unnatural lifestyle. Most of us rarely, if ever, stop to enquire into who we are and what we’re doing.

But even more than the outer world that we’ve been acclimated to is the inner world of how we have been trained to think and what we tend to think about. How natural are our obsessions and preoccupations, and how have they complicated our attempts to understand ourselves beneath the most superficial level? Do we even realize how out of sync we are with our own natural state of beingness?

Have we just lost our compass or have we carelessly tossed it into an abyss?
