Mid-Winter Morning

The bright sky is growing dim

Mid-winter morning
the bright sky is growing dim,
hidden under flannel clouds
hemming the heavens in.

If only I had sprung from bed
when the sun first touched my eyes,
instead of dreaming over toast and books,
ignoring the world outside.

Now turning away from the darkening sky
to the beckoning light of my room,
where book-lined shelves and nestled cats
melt the morning away too soon.
