Mastering Mindfulness — The Not So Serious Practice of Being in the Moment

Ever blurted something out to a friend or coworker and immediately thought, “Oh shit” and you are left wondering why there has been a total disconnect between your mouth and your brain?

It’s alright; it happens to the best of us. But the real question is, how did you handle it?

Did you experience that awkward moment? You know, the one where the person on the receiving end of your “oh shit moment ” stands there, eyes wide like they’ve seen a ghost, their face slowly evolving into a lovely shade of beet-red. Yeah, not fun.

Perhaps you found yourself in a sudden disappearing act, wondering why your mind took an impromptu vacation.

If you did, you were ahead of the game, that means you are primed for mindfulness.

Most folks barely give their brains a high-five. I mean, we wake up and run on autopilot through the day, and as long as we’re not suddenly mistaking hemorrhoid cream for toothpaste, we assume everything’s A-OK upstairs.

It’s like having this gray, squishy sponge in our heads doing its thing without so much as a ‘thank you.’ It’s the unsung hero, the silent partner in this wild ride called life. We’re out there, doing our best, and it’s just quietly sitting there, running the show.

Let’s have a chat about our brains for a moment. Just to clarify the difference between your Brain and your Mind.

Think of your brain as the actual hardware, like a computer. It’s the physical part inside your head that helps you think, remember, and do everything.

On the other hand, your mind is more like the software you run on that computer. It’s all your thoughts, feelings, and ideas — basically, everything you experience and think about.

The relationship we have with it, for most of us it’s pretty relaxed, Your mind is like that reliable friend who tends to fly under the radar until they unexpectedly pull off something incredible or crack an unexpectedly hilarious joke.

Until those moments, our minds quietly go about their tasks while we carry on, often forgetting to give them credit for their impressive abilities.

It’s the ultimate ‘out-of-sight, out-of-mind’ situation.

Our minds work tirelessly behind the scenes, it is the unseen force keeping everything running smoothly. Sadly, our brains rarely receive the credit they truly deserve. Maybe it’s about time we show a little more appreciation for the remarkable powerhouse tucked inside our skulls.

That being said, let’s jump into mindfulness and stop taking ourselves so seriously.

So, What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is your secret weapon in navigating this chaotic, WiFi-dependent, triple-espresso society we live in.

Mindfulness serves as your anchor amidst chaos, injecting a dose of laughter into life’s madness, and that, my friend… is how you have to embrace this skill.

Mindfulness is the foundation of mental health; once you adopt a mindfulness practice, life gets much more manageable.

So you can stop treating your mind like that kitchen drawer you know the “junk drawer” the one you have to squish down to close; full of random cables, unwanted writing tools, and all the other crap you think there may be a purpose for in the future — useful but always cluttered and mostly ignored.

Steady yourself as I walk you through some of the day-to-day scenarios where mindfulness reveals itself as a silent superhero, rescuing us from the clutches of multitasking madness, nudging us towards serenity amid chaos, and turning mundane moments into remarkable opportunities for presence.

What it’s NOT:

  • Mindfulness is not Mystical; It’s Practical: Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to wear robes or give up coffee to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness involves being completely aware of the present moment, whether it’s the realization that you’ve been absentmindedly stirring an empty coffee cup for the last five minutes or simply observing the details of what’s happening right now.”

What it IS:

  • Mindfulness is where Procrastination Meets Productivity: It’s not about doing nothing; it’s about doing one thing at a time with your full attention. Have you ever tried eating a snack without checking your phone or sending emails? It’s a revolutionary act.
  • Mindfulness is the Superpower of Single-Tasking: In a world obsessed with multitasking, mindfulness is the superhero of single-tasking. It’s the art of savoring a cup of coffee without mentally drafting your next ten work emails or accidentally using salt instead of sugar because you’re trying to compose a mental to-do list.
  • Mindfulness is the New Black: Who needs a fancy yoga mat or a secluded mountain retreat? Mindfulness is trendy, accessible, and goes with everything — yes, even those mismatched socks you’re wearing right now.

What’s the difference between MINDLESSNESS & MINDFULNESS?

  • Mindfulness and Mindlessness lets look at that. Mindlessness is auto-piloting through life; mindfulness is noticing when you’ve accidentally put your shirt on backward or walked into a meeting wearing two different shoes.

Where can you do it?

  • Practice mindfulness in Traffic Jams and Grocery Lines: It’s the art of not honking profusely in traffic or giving a side-eye to someone with 20 items in the 10-items-or-less line. (pro tip; Hum.. its weird but it works)

When can mindfulness be helpful?

  • It helps you find your inner peace amid chaos: Think of mindfulness as your gold medal in the event of life. Whether you’re stuck in traffic, dealing with a toddler tantrum, or trying to decode Ikea instructions, it’s about taking a breath and realizing that life’s hurdles are just part of the obstacle course.
  • Remembering to cut yourself some slack: Picture this: You’re juggling work, family, and the existential crisis caused by realizing your fridge is emptier than your promises to start eating healthier. Mindfulness doesn’t magically fill your fridge, but it does help you appreciate the emptiness and maybe turn it into a minimalist art piece.

Why should we practice the skill of mindfulness ?

  • We are constantly being updated on everything, how are we going to get anything done? We live in a world where our phones ping more frequently than your teen asks you for money. Mindfulness is like that friend who helps you ignore those pesky notifications and focus on the task at hand, whether it’s work, enjoying a meal, or pretending to listen to your friend’s 20-minute story about their cat.

Remember, mastering mindfulness isn’t about erasing chaos; it’s about finding your calm within it. It’s about acknowledging that life is a roller coaster, and sometimes you’ve just got to throw your hands in the air and enjoy the ride.

So, let’s embrace mindfulness with open arms (and a good dose of humor). It’s not about becoming a meditation guru; it’s about adding some much-needed LOLs to your daily OMGs.
