If you are a fan of the famous Money Heist franchise on Netflix, you must be used to the song Bella Ciao. It’s the theme song for the series. The comrades of the show sing the song to rejoice in their victory. Though the series is new, the song is at least 80 years old and was an important revolutionary song in World War II.

World War II:

Italian Partisan. Source- Wikipedia

Italy became a unified country under Garibaldi. Before that, it was under feudal governance where hundreds of small regional landlords ruled over the peasants and their lands. The landlords made huge fortunes while the peasants became poorer and poorer and had to sell their lands. The landlords then employed the peasants as laborers in their own land. To vent off their frustration on the precarious situation, the peasants formulated the earlier format of the Bella Ciao. Benito Mussolini took over the Italian government before the onset of World War II. He dragged it into an unnecessary war in North Africa and Europe.
