Grammar Police Arriving Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

I’ve noticed an alarming trend on Medium of late. Some of the mean bitchiness and downright nastiness that inhabits so much of the rest of the social media universe has started to creep in here. By in large, we’ve managed to keep ourselves free of it for years.

I avoid entering the swamp that we call social media. No Facebook, not even a LinkedIn profile. I’m just too fragile for the malice and spitefulness that seems to be an accepted part of that arena. Medium seemed to be a somewhat different playing field. Here we were all struggling, wannabe writers, just trying to get our voices heard and help one another to achieve those goals.

Well, that seems to be changing fast. The grammar police have arrived with their eagle eye for misplaced commas and, God forbid, the occasional typo. As for the misuse of ellipses, well… let's bring back lapidation. (Did I spell that correctly?)

I mainly patrol the environmental and nature beat, and to be fair, their things are still quite gentle. In part, because half of us probably can’t spell very well anyway, but also because we have a common message to share, and if there is a grammatical error here or there, who cares? The important point is the substance of what we are saying. We are busy saving the planet…
