One of the Top Fears Among Americans

and 5 ways to punch it in the face

Russell Crowe (as Jimmy Braddock) said it best in the movie Cinderella Man regarding life’s punches, “Let me take ’em in the ring. At least I know who’s hitting me.”

Crowe was referring to things that the Great Depression had brought him: poverty, emotional devastation, and shame. While these concepts are not tangible, they are as real as the air you breathe and most of us fear them.

However, because we can’t “see” them, we don’t know what to punch, metaphorically. Not knowing what we are fighting leads to avoidance and suppression and a lack of acknowledgment which leads to a lack of awareness, and therefore, nothing to fight. It’s a vicious cycle, and there are many “intangible” fears. There is one, however, that is on the top of the list for Americans.

Most common intangible fear among Americans

One of the most common intangible fears is the fear of failure.

According to Linkagoal’s Fear Factor Index in partnership with YouGov, among 1,083 respondents surveyed, “1 in 3 Americans were found to be scared of failure (31%), more than spiders (30%), being home alone (9%), or even the paranormal (15%).
