We started this series of posts about the largest islands in the United States and looked at a few islands in Alaska where 38 of the nation’s 50 largest islands are located. Now we’re looking at the six largest islands in the 48-state US. Two of the six largest, Isle Royale and Drummond Island, are in Michigan and I wrote a post about how contrasting those two islands are. In this post, we’ll look at the other four largest ones starting with Long Island.

Long Island, New York

What can we say about Long Island that hasn’t already been said? Its eight million people would make it the 13th largest state! It is home to more people than entire states such as Washington, Arizona, Tennessee and Massachusetts. A lot of what we think of as New York city is actually on Long Island including the majority of New York City’s residents (58%). The boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are located on the island. We could make a long list of what in New York is actually on Long Island ranging from both of its major airports (LaGuardia and JFK) to the NY Mets.

Long Island is sandy and rocky, all deposited by the glaciers. It’s 188 miles long…
