“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

― Anais Nin

From Left to Right: Jordan B Peterson, Carl Jung

The self-help industry exists because of one thing only; “The pressure we all feel to improve”. Blame the media, blame the self-help gurus for cashing in, blame the consumers for not getting their act together. Yes, the game is rigged but the truth is self-help exists because of our need to get better. Take that need out of the equation, and the self-help industry will fall to pieces.

If everyone was okay with where they are and who they are, will the world be a better place? If being was possible without being, what would we become? Or, if our current reality wasn’t the case, will humanity be reduced to a single stream of consciousness where none was the wiser?

I’d argue that for the very fact a hierarchy exists and we are naturally curious, it doesn’t take much to want to figure out what is at the end of each side of the hierarchy. Our natural curiosity will drive us to those ends. It’s why a poor person will naturally gravitate towards wealth. And a rich person will sometimes willingly live poor.

Still, I am left to ponder why. Why do I wake up each day to feel an increasing need to get better? I wasn’t always this way. I didn’t always wake up to five…
