Those Eyes

Holding us hostage

It isn’t the tiny fist,
the dimpled toes,
the velvet skin
or the crinkled nose

that tugs at our hearts
and opens our arms,
yet another victim
to a new baby’s charms.

It is their big eyes
pleading their case
holding us hostage,
entranced by their face.

Big eyes empower
each puppy and kitten,
make charmers of chipmunks
for thus it is written:

we must not ignore
the pull of young eyes
Protect us, they plead.
Let love be your guide.

Wisdom and innocence
strife and survival
speak through the eyes
of each new arrival.
