Can you imagine a world where you could not rely or depend on anyone or anything? It would be sheer chaos! How about your life? How would it affect you if you cannot be relied on or depended on? Let’s examine how reliability and dependability affect us and what they can do to help us live a better life.

Reliability and dependability

What do the words reliable and dependable mean to you? If they are meaningful, your future may be bright. If you find them meaningless, you should give them more thought.

The two words are synonymous, with essentially the same meaning. Some claim reliability has more to do with things and dependability more about people. Others claim reliability is more objective, while dependability is more subjective.

The Oxford Languages dictionary shows how similar the two words are.

Reliable as an adjective — consistently good in quality or performance; able to be trusted.

Reliable as a noun — a person or thing with trustworthy qualities.

Dependable as an adjective — trustworthy and reliable.
