What We Saw While Exploring Castellfollit de las Rocas
A Hidden Gem in Spain
A Little about Castellfollit de las Rocas
Way up high, about 970 feet, in the province of Girona and set between the Fluvia and Toronell rivers, lies a tiny village by the name of Castellfollit de la Roca in Spain. According to the 2018 census, Castellfollit de la Roca has a population of 956.
Seeing Castellfollit de la Roca images on a few sites, we ventured out to witness in person this magnificent rock village. It was about an hour’s drive from Barcelona to Castellfollit de la Roca. Part of this quaint village still keeps its medieval look. Therefore, vehicles are limited to the locals. There is a public parking area for visitors to park and continue the rest of the way on foot. It is a 3-minute walk through narrow streets to the square so we made a few stops in various nooks to take in the stunning views of the Garrotxa Volcanic Area Nature Reserve.
Enjoying a Quick Walk
Walking through its narrow cobbled-stoned streets, we enjoyed the old medieval look of stone houses and the Sant Salvador Church. Most of the homes are in good shape; however, there were a few torn or in need of repair, though it didn’t take away from the quaintness of the town. The church building no longer operates as a church. They use it for exhibitions and cultural events.
There’s an App for it too
The Garrotxa Cultour has an app that allows you to discover La Garrotxa Cultour by following proposals, games, and challenges. It will lead you to some interesting spots other than the ones posted along the route.
It was an early cold (low 40 degrees) and windy morning, therefore we did not use the app. But we could not leave Castellfollit de la Roca without reaching the Josep Pla Square. It is at the edge of the cliff and where you will find most of the stunning views. Though our time spent in Castellfollit de la Roca was less than an hour, it was worth the drive and tolerating the cold. If you are ever in Barcelona, I suggest you take the drive to this quaint old Catalonian town. I think you will enjoy this little hidden gem of Spain.
