Colourism is the daughter of racism and it also needs to be combated alongside racism. It is a topic that is often brushed over and ignored, many don't believe in its existence, but it's evident that it is real and that is an issue. Its prominence in the music and beauty industry is strong enough to defy claims of it being an illusion.

Colourism: Discrimination based on skin colour, also known as colourism or shadeism, is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which people who are usually members of the same race are treated differently based on the social implications which come with the cultural meanings which are attached to skin colour.

Slavery

During slavery discrimination based on skin colour started when lighter-skinned slaves were assigned domestic tasks, as opposed to darker-skinned slaves who were forced to go out and work on the plantation. As time went on preference for lighter-skinned slaves developed because the offspring were seen as being closer to the white man and woman's standard of beauty. Slave owners viewed the lighter-skinned as more desirable, healthier and smarter than the darker-skinned slaves.
