By the time I upload this, I might have reached 100 followers! But that milestone is overrated.

I’ve decided to celebrate 99 followers instead! (FREE eBook at the end)

How It All Started

I’m 20, in my penultimate year of college, inching towards the end.

Honestly, I’m scared.

I have no interest in doing a 9–5 job for someone I don’t like doing things I don’t enjoy.

Nothing against 9–5. It’s just not for me. I’m a more creative person and my creativity would be wasted there.

So, I set out on this journey of building a following online.

I see countless people here on Medium, earning a full-time income doing what they love — writing!

It got me thinking, “Why couldn't I do that?” And so I began.

How It’s Going

It’s tough.

I write almost every day on Medium but that’s not the difficult part, believe it or not.

It was in the beginning. But once I built the momentum, the habit of writing became as routine as brushing my teeth.

The difficult part is progress, or the lack thereof.

Success has an exponential curve. That means, when things start to pick up, everything happens almost overnight.

But, the difficult part is the beginning — when no one yet knows who you are.

It’s difficult to make people care.

How It’s Going to Continue

I haven't reached a gigantic milestone in any way but I’m happy because of one reason.

If I can reach 100 followers, then with consistency, I can definitely reach 200.

If I can reach 200, I can eventually reach 500. 1000. 2000. You get the idea.

I’m only limited by time.

I don’t know how long it will take for me to get to 2000 followers. But the fact is, I know I most definitely can get there. It’s only a matter of time.

My Tips For Any Aspiring Writers on Medium

Just do it. Honestly.

You have nothing to lose, except some time perhaps, which we anyway end up wasting doomscrolling.

Instead, give Medium a try. Your life might just change.

Here are some tips from my experience:

  1. Write daily. Showing up is half the battle. In the beginning, no one knows you. Only by showing up every day will you build a connection with people that leaves them wanting more. Also, the more you write, the better you get.
  2. Engage daily. No one is alone in the digital world. It’s called SOCIAL media for a reason. Be social. Engage with like-minded creators and take a genuine interest in them. We tend to pay back what we receive from others. This is the law of reciprocity. And finally,
  3. Consume daily. Both on Medium as well as other sources like books, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. Be a sponge. Absorb every idea. That’s how you develop your own. Your quality of output is equivalent to your quality of input. Curate your content consumption carefully.
