The best things to collect are memories. That is why people take photographs. But there are people all around the world, hunting for rare and beautiful items.

Collecting must be one of the most varied of human activities, and many psychologists find it fascinating. Some of the most common forms of collecting are archtophilist (collecting teddy bears), philatelist (collecting postage stamps), and deltiologist (collecting postcards). One might say amassing hundreds or thousands of postcards, wrappers, or whatever, takes time, energy, and money which could surely be put to much more productive use. And yet there are millions of collectors around the world.

Why do they do it? There are the people who collect because they want to make money. They buy things cheap, make a collection and sell them to make profits. Some collectors collect to build a social life. Just like people join a club or a gym, collectors join groups that bring them into contact with liked minded people. By attending meetings of a group of collectors and exchanging information on items. Another reason for collecting is to find something unique or special. For some, it just starts as a hobby. Of course, all hobbies give pleasure, but what sets collecting apart is passion. This is something one can get totally engrossed doing, and gives a strong sense of fulfillment.

Whatever the reason, compulsive collectors are an insatiable bunch. They might have a huge collection yet there’s always room for more and every new find is like a trophy they cannot resist.

Some collections that may have the potential to make you rich are:

1. Classics

If you are a book lover, you can start with classics. If you have first editions or classics, you might have a gem in your hand. Books can be highly valued based on rarity and binding quality, according to auction company Sotheby’s. Some might even have the signature of the author. And that would bring you a fortune too. But only if you are willing to give your beloved book away.

2. Coins

If you have a large number of coins from different countries and eras then claim yourself to be a “numistmat” a collector of coins. And if any of those coins turn out to be rare and valuable, you might even become a ‘millionaire’. So, if you have a coin collection and are looking to sell, Heritage Auctions offers a price guide for beginners on its website. You can also visit the Professional Coin Grading Service website to get your coins graded. A rare 1933 Indian Head Gold Eagle sold for $587,500, according to Heritage Auctions.

3. Stamps

Stamp collectors seem an ancient breed, don’t they? But if you were one of those collectors when you were a child, you may have a good chance to make some money!

If your collection is organized, it will likely sell for more money, according to Learn About Stamps, an online resource for stamp collectors. For example, the “Inverted Jenny” stamp was bought by a private buyer who paid $1.17 million for it. The stamp was initially worth 24 cents!

4. Vinyls

Not only vinyls take you on a musical journey through space and time but also acquiring a piece of music memorabilia can be a thrill! According to Heritage Auctions, a collection of these pieces could get you a good amount if you decide to sell them. Rock and roll, blues, and jazz pieces have done well in this area of collectibles.

5. Comic books

Even though not of much worth when they were first written, comics could now be suddenly worth a fortune. Besides giving you and your children some great times, comic book collections of first-print editions of original titles like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man can get you good cash because of their rarity. If you have any comics, especially from the 70s and earlier, you could be in for a big payday.

6. Action figures

These small and interesting figurines can be charming but if they are vintage figures with hand-painted parts they are rare and can get you a nice haul. Some collectors might even pay more than what the action figure is worth if it means they can add adding it to their personal collection. But course there is a catch, only figures that are untouched and in pristine condition will have the highest values.

One can become fairly rich by selling a collection. Of course, how much collectibles are worth can be subjective and can depend on a variety of factors like condition, age, rarity, demand, etc.
