Do you feel doubtful about starting a newsletter?

I had the same thought. There was doubt about publishing weekly content alongside writing 3–4 articles.

Will I be able to do it?

However, I started my first newsletter. It turned out to be easier than I had thought.

Below are a few tips to help you start your newsletter journey.

1. Find a topic you know about

What is that one topic you know well?

It could be anything.

  • Painting
  • Technology
  • Lifestyle productivity tips
  • Books
  • Writing

There is always one hobby that you liked doing since childhood and know something about it.

You may not be an expert, but you must have some practical knowledge.

Do not write on multiple topics. Start with one topic.

Pro Tip: It is easy to write on known content. Focusing on one topic is super helpful.

2. Find a topic you want to learn

You may know a topic, but there are more topics to learn.

One learns from books and example only that certain things can be done. Actual learning requires that you do those things.” — Frank Herbert

What is that skill you want to learn?

I will go first.

Currently, I am focusing on learning the following topics.

  • Writing catchy headlines
  • Art of storytelling
  • Newsletter
  • Copywriting

I will take one at a time and share the lessons in my weekly newsletter.

Choose one topic to learn and share it in your newsletter. Someone else may be thinking of learning about the same subject, and your newsletter could help the readers.

And there you connect with them.

See, you never know when the magic will happen. All you have to do is show up consistently.

Pro tip: Share how to solve a specific problem.

3. List 2–3 big accounts in your niche

Search a few big accounts in your niche and check their tweet posts/podcasts.

Save a few things that resonate with you.

Use these in your newsletter. It is a curated newsletter where you gather others’ content and publish it in one place.

Pro Tip: Add your analysis for every curated post. It reflects your thoughts.

5. Use the recommendation feature

You cannot grow your newsletter by only publishing.

Collaboration with other creators will take off your newsletter dream.

Use the recommendation feature of Convertkit.

  • You search for creators in your niche and request them to recommend you to their subscribers list.
  • You recommend them as well. It’s a win-win for both.

Pro tip: If you are a new writer, target small to medium accounts.

6. Leverage your social and writing platforms

Writing daily-ish is the main ingredient to a successful writing journey.

Do you struggle to write daily on hectic weekdays?

On the weekends, do you feel too lazy to write?

Don’t worry; I have covered you at the end of this article.

Whenever you write on any writing platform or social media platform, add the link to your newsletter. It helps to bring exposure to your newsletter. I know what you are thinking now. Placing the newsletter link at the end of every post might sound salesy. I thought the same way a few weeks ago.

Then, I read a few articles, and it changed my perception.

Pro tip: Educate about the products before trying to do that sale.

7. Plan the long-term goal

Do not write seven days a week. Every week, block one day for doing deep thinking. Ask yourself what you want to do with your newsletter.

  • Is it just for a hobby?
  • Do you want to make it a source of income?
  • Would you like to write a newsletter to sustain it in the long term?

Be honest with yourself. If you do not like writing, that’s fine. Finding the motivation to write daily will not be a problem if you love to write.

Here is a short guide on how to generate revenue from newsletters.

Pro tip: Start with a free newsletter and give free products.

8. Be consistent

Did anybody have to teach you to be consistent in playing daily or doing that favorite hobby during childhood?

No, right?

I looked forward to the Sunday because I had my art class. I am not a painter, but I love to paint whatever comes to my mind.

You will never be inconsistent in writing if you love to write.

Writing is like speaking to someone.

If you don’t know whether you love writing, write 100 words for 30 days and see how you feel.

Your feelings will guide you to write or not to write.

Pro tip: Write on known topics.

9. Ask questions

Writing a newsletter need not be a solo ride. Ask questions to your subscribers about the challenges they face.

Their pain points will give ideas for your content.

Pro tip: Take feedback from your subscribers.

10. Be proactive

While reading articles, if you sense that somebody is facing difficulty in their writing journey or in any field where you know, be proactive to help them.

In social media, you can find many questions on a few posts. Pick one post and answer a few questions.

It serves two purposes.

  • Your social media visibility increase
  • You get more content ideas

Add the newsletter link in the bio of the social media or writing platform.

Pro tip: Be eager to help someone with your knowledge.

It’s a wrap.

These tips are good to start. After writing for a few weeks, you will devise your customized newsletter strategy.

Do not think much as a beginner.

Just start.
