I was suspended on a rope above the shallow river, focusing intently on my progress. Under me, I could hear the not-so-soothing-now sound of the water. Despite all the secure equipment in place, my mind was summoning different scenarios of what could go wrong with an impressive speed.
I was afraid. Even if I was safe, I was scared. Very scared.
That was not good. With an effort, I lifted my foot focusing on the not-so-distant point that was my destination. And everything shifted:
The fear was still there, but sharp and clear and as goal-oriented as a laser beam. The river, the water, and the potential danger faded and everything went in the background.
I felt so alive, so free! And I found myself thinking “What a beautiful fear!”
It was such an exhilarating experience that when I stumbled upon the book “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin de Becker, I knew I had to read it. I needed to know more about how to harness fear`s gift!
The book was not what I expected. It was challenging and hard to read. The opening chapter just jumped out at me!
It was like reading a 10-times-worst version of one of my most traumatic experiences…
