I’ve developed an affinity of late for Phoebe Bridgers.

It helps that she shares my birth year, birth month, and penchant for dark musings.

I’ve already written that sad lyrics are boss.

Bridgers perfectly encapsulates what it must feel like to be an outsider. She is particularly good at revealing what it must feel like to suffer from a mental health condition, particularly depression.

But her words can also stick like a magnet to otherwise healthy folk who are merely caught in a fleeting ennui-driven state.

Above all, her lyrics are poetry in motion. If an obsession with words and the intricacies of sentences are things you enjoy grappling with on a daily basis, then Bridgers’ lyrics are your playground.

~ Phoebe Bridgers’ luscious lyrics~

  • ‘‘For a chemical imbalance, you sure know how to ride a train.’’
  • ‘‘I went with you up to the place you grew up
And we spent a week in the cold
Just long enough to Walden it with you.’’
  • ‘‘Stunning 8K resolution, meditation app
In honor of the revolution, it’s half-off at the Gap.’’
  • ‘‘I wanna live at the Holiday Inn
Where somebody else makes the bed.’’
  • ‘‘I wanna be emaciated
I wanna hear one song without thinking of you
    I wish I was on a spaceship
Just me and my dog and an impossible view.’’
  • ‘‘So we spent what was left of our serotonin
To chew on our cheeks and stare at the moon’’
  • ‘‘The whole world at your fingertips, the ocean at your door.’’
  • ‘‘One of your eyes is always half-shut
Somethin’ happened when you were a kid’’
  • ‘‘I’ve been driving out to the suburbs/ To park at the Goodwill
And stare at the chemtrails/ With my little brother
He said you called on his birthday/ You were off by like ten days
But you get a few points for tryin’’
  • ‘‘I’m not afraid of living on a fault line’’

She also sings.
