It Will Still Be Minimum Wage

In America and Canada, politicians and trade unions are advocating for a legal minimum wage of $15 an hour. Some of those advocating for this are earning salaries of $100,000 or more a year, much more in some cases, and some are millionaires.

Bernie Sanders, the United States senator who is advocating for a minimum wage of $15 an hour, makes an annual salary of $174,000. Senator Sanders is also a millionaire.

Some of these leaders have called $15 an hour a “living wage.” What kind of life can someone in North America have on $15 an hour?

It is political spin

The politicians are looking for votes; they don’t care about you. They make promises they can’t or won’t keep.

In 2017 the liberal government of Ontario decided to legislate an increase in the minimum wage from $11.40 an hour to $14 an hour in 2018, and then to $15 an hour in 2019. The liberals had a majority in the provincial parliament.

This meant that the minimum wage in Ontario would increase by 22.81% in less than a year, and a year later by 7.14%.

Many businesses were not pleased with this sudden increase in their costs and took steps to protect themselves.
