As I’m writing this I’m at a family friend's house.

We’re here to celebrate their birthday and their huge achievement.

But I’m in a quiet place, writing while the rest of the group is partying.

I’ve found my stride and won’t let anything stop me from writing daily.

But it wasn’t always this way. I used to be confused about this online writing thing.

Now, I’ve busted 3 myths about writing online and can write without fear.

I want to share them with you, so you can write confidently and find your stride.

Let’s dive in.

Myth #1: Platform matters

Being early on a platform doesn’t matter.

Because you can grow your audience on any platform even if you’re new.

So get this in your head, No platform owes it to you to grow your audience.

So stop feeling ENTITLED.

“Don’t feel entitled to anything you didn’t sweat and struggle for.” — Marian Wright Edelman

When I learned that the platform on which to write doesn’t matter, my worldview changed.

It wasn’t until after I learned this that I started making progress online.

How I do it:

  • I start on any platform I like. But I only write on 2 platforms.
  • And I’ve committed to learning the nuances of these 2 platforms and posting consistently on them.
  • I have a newsletter with my audience’s emails to maintain my reach even if I get banned from these platforms.

Myth #2: Consistency is all that matters

Being consistent isn’t enough anymore.

To stand out, you must change, improve, and practice deliberately.

You must do this by writing, posting daily and changing according to the trends.

“If you want to innovate, you have to iterate!” — Jim Highsmith

My mind was blown this week because I learned that being a consistent writer doesn’t matter.

And I learned a better way to write online.

What I learned, and how I do it:

  • I write daily on my 2 platforms.
  • I constantly learn from better writers than me by buying their courses, attending their webinars, and signing up for their newsletters.
  • And I practice what I learn when I’m writing.

Myth #3: It’s all about value.

In this age of AI, we’re heavily bombarded with information and tired of it.

Writing online isn’t about giving value anymore, it’s also about adding your emotions and stories into your content.

And the big idea is to fall in love with the process, not the outcome.

“Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers.” — Isaac Asimov

I used to think writing was all about giving value, and it got me nowhere.

But when I had this mindset shift, my progress went up.

How I do it:

  • I always find a way to add my personal experiences and stories to my writing without overdoing it.
  • I write with my raw emotions and feelings and don’t filter myself.
  • I add my tips where I can.

3 big TRUTHS about writing online you need to know:

  • The platform doesn’t matter. What matters is you’re consistent on one.
  • Write daily and iterate every time.
  • Let your emotions, life experiences, and stories drip into your writing.

Your entire writing will change when you accept these truths.

And you’ll attract the audience you crave.
