3 Reasons Why Adopting a Cat Was the Best Decision I Made During the Pandemic

Wondering if a Cat Is Right for You? Consider the Following

Think back to summer 2020. What was it like for you? On the global front, we were just starting to deal with the reality of the pandemic. Emotionally, sh*t was a mess. I had a real lull in my contracts and I had no idea if my clients were ever coming back (they did, thankfully). We had Covid guidelines and a curfew in place where I am. I hadn’t seen my family in months. All in all:

It was feeling really lonely out here.

At some point, while I was lounging on the couch with my partner and had my feet up on the ottoman, I turned to him and asked:

“Can’t you just see a little cat purring by my feet right now, chilling with us while we watch TV?”

I could see it so clearly. He pondered the idea but quickly went back to whatever we were watching on TV, and so did I. But then, it was like the cat gods saw my sincere wish and put it all in motion.

My nephews had a hamster named Ginger. She was a cute little critter. Tiny, reddish-brown and energetic. I had no issues with Ginger. But she met an unfortunate demise after she went on a road trip to Niagara falls with the family. She was in the air-conditioned car, but the ride back home was too long and too stuffy. The poor thing suffocated in her little plastic cage. My partner and I coincidentally ended up witnessing the whole thing because we were at their cottage for the week and my brother-in-law made a stop there on their way home to chat with us. The chat turned into a hamster funeral service. The kids were devastated.

The loss of Ginger left a hole in their hearts. A hole that could only be filled with what they wanted: a cat. Lo and behold, a neighbour of my sister’s was about to have her first child and couldn’t keep her two cats anymore. She offered them to my sister and her kids got their wish times two! 5-year-old brother and sister duo Oreo and Chester. Oreo adapted very quickly to the constant action of living in a 3 kids-under-10 household. Chester did not. He hid all day and barely ate. He freaked out at the slightest noise and constantly felt cornered. He wasn’t happy at all.

My sister had heard me lament about wanting a cat for years, and I don’t have any children, so she immediately called me up and practically imposed this cat on us. Lol. I can be indecisive when it comes to things like this, so she pretty much made the decision for me. This cat isn’t actually an imposition on us!

Chester was rehomed with us and became Archie. We adopted Archie on October 13, 2020. It’s been a year since we’ve had him and I wouldn’t trade him for the world! He’s made my life so much better! Want to know why?

Here’s 3 reasons why adopting a cat was the best decision I made during the pandemic.

  1. Cats are low maintenance but have a lot of love to offer

It’s honestly a myth that cats don’t care at all about you. People say this because they constantly compare them to dogs. But they won’t showcase it like dogs do. In my experience, Archie is a cat who wants luuuurve. He needs constant reassurance. I think it’s because he was rehomed twice in such a short amount of time. He probably has abandonment issues. That’s just a theory, but Archie is the type of cat who loves to be picked up, cuddled, and scratched behind his ears. He is so loving and has a lot of love to offer, and that’s love I can definitely give back!

2. I quit smoking because I could tell it bothered him

That one is a doozie (not dooby, heh). I used to smoke indoors. But every time I did, I noticed Archie would stay away. He was afraid of the smoke and I don’t think he liked the smell or anything to do with it. Once I noticed this, I stopped smoking indoors entirely. Then, I just stopped completely and switched to vaping. It has made a TREMENDOUS difference in my own mood. I’m not sure I would’ve made the switch had it not been for Archie who was clearly not feeling it. I was too heavy in the fog to notice! But now that I’ve only smoked a handful of times this year (outside), I can clearly see how lethargic it used to make me. I’ve been so much more productive since I decided to stop! Adopting a cat has literally made me healthier! That alone is so worth it.

And last, but definitely not least, the third reason why it was the best decision. Are you ready?

3. Archie found a furever home!

Archie won’t ever have to worry about being rehomed or abandoned (or renamed) ever again. He’s safe and well-loved and the king of his castle! He makes me smile every single day and he’s happy, well-fed, and safe. That’s all that matters.
