Before we can overcome our self-destructive habits we need to know what they are and why we choose them. A clinical definition of a self-destructive habit is anything that puts you at physical or emotional risk — be it intentional or unintentional.

I believe that this definition of self-destructive is inadequate. Any behavior we choose that disrupts our path forward towards Your Unique Definition of Success is self-destructive. It is disrupting your capacity to become the you that you have the potential to become.

What Are Common Self-Destructive Habits?

  • Any addiction — drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, food, sex, gambling, video games, exercise, and more. Some of these are essential … for example, food and exercise … but when your attention to them becomes all-consuming and shuts out other endeavors and relationships they have become addictions.
  • risky sexual behavior
  • self-injury — cutting, attempting suicide
