1. Ranked Choice Voting: School Yard Tactics by the Bay

An October 24 medium.com piece (I was not yet with Illumination) about two decades of mayoral elections in San Francisco and Oakland. There’s some math in it but no numbers bigger than 10 thousand, although percentages play a role and I juggle multiple layers of voting blocs to make a point. But that’s what this new Ranked Choice Voting fad does. It makes the exercise a technocrat’s dream: run an election, stop debate on Election Day, and let the algorithm decide that a 29% vote-getter is now a majority choice. Except it isn’t a majority until the algorithm “exhausts” some votes…
