Last summer, former CD&V Minister Koen Geens stated that serious measures have become virtually impossible at the federal level in Belgium: “Only spending increases are feasible.”

If Koen Geens is right in saying that serious measures are impossible, perhaps it’s worthwhile to have a look at 5 non-serious measures that were recently proposed on r/belgium to allow the Belgian government to bring in some cash.

Idea #1: Make personalized license plates transferable

Personalized license plates are gaining popularity in Belgium. The number of applications went from less than 2,000 in 2017, to more than 10,000 in 2021.

To further boost this growth, one Reddit user proposed to allow citizens to buy a personalized license plate for someone else. Receiving one as a gift (rather than having to buy one yourself) could also eliminate the uneasiness that prevents some people from making this purchase.
